The Art of Future Design — Part I: Framing, Assessing, and Identifying Relevant Context

Our desire to design a better future for those coming behind must be guided by a new framework that considers the complexity of a yet unknown future and the different forces that influence it. This is what we will explore in this article.

Throughout human history, people wake up to the fact that we are here for only a short “blip” in time. They may look up to a star- ry night and ponder the vastness of space, the greatness and smallness of their own lives. This sudden awakening to the preciousness of time inspires many to contemplate the meaning and purpose of their lives; their placement in histo- ry; their role in creating or at least influencing the future; the power of their own choices to change direction, influence others, and contrib- ute to the greater sense of meaning in the course of human history. It leads many to recognise that each one of us is a valuable yet momentary hero living our life in a human society on a liv- ing, breathing, and changing planet.
